Hi, we are back on track. In this article we would share our Flam experiences.
Norway is one of the most beautiful country in the world. Every mountains, valleys, fjords and the cities have a story that carries beautiful tradition with it.
We share our trip to Norway in three different stories. Experience and sightseeing places in cities like Oslo and Bergen were different from that of the natural wonders of Flam, Myrdal and Tromso. We travelled in the month of September when Oslo was cold, Bergen& Flam was rainy and Tromso was freezing at 0-2 degrees.
In this article we would share the Flam experiences.
Our Journey to Flam started by train from OSLO via MYRDAL. We booked our tickets well in advance from India to enjoy the 5 hour scenic journey from Oslo to Flam. Boarded at Oslo central station 6.25 am by NSB-(Norwegian State railways) currently rebranded as VY. This train has two coaches namely Comfort and standard. This route goes up to Voss from Oslo. Myrdal is the junction where we switch over to the famous UNESCO heritage Flamsbana railways to FLAM.
The route from Oslo to Myrdal was as expected, the beautiful country side greenery surrounded by valleys, mountains and waterfalls. The Comfort coaches have coffee machines and the train also have a pantry car.
The last but one station before Myrdal was the toast master for Flam’s beauty. The snow showers and freezing cold at the station FINSE was an amazing feel which one should experience personally.
We relaxed and enjoyed the five hour journey to Myrdal and kept our body and eyes at peace and eagerly waiting to take-in the unlimited beauty that was about to be unfolded in FLAM :).
The train arrived late to Myrdal station by few minutes ( 20/25 minutes) but the Flamsbana rail will always be waiting for NSBs arrival as they are interconnected. To our luck, the train from Flam was also delayed, so we could enjoy the breathtaking view of the surroundings from Myrdal station.

We missed an amazing opportunity to trek/walk along the beautiful valley to Flam (about 20KM), dotted by numerous waterfalls, rivulets and grazing sheep. It’s a downhill and we could have done it, if not for our huge suitcases. In fact, we saw few of the travellers with their ruck sacks walking down from the station.
The first station after Myrdal is Kjosfossen waterfall which has a traditional Scandinavian folk story, where the pretty woman Huldra, a mythical character, sings and wait for the passers by to attract. The breathtaking view of waterfalls and the music at backdrop enumerating the story was adding a poetic touch to the entire journey.

Its one hour journey for the 20 kms to the Flam station where the history of the construction of the Flamsbana railways and the track laying techniques were displayed in the rail Museum behind the information center.
We booked at Brekke apartments, which is situated about 1.3 kms from Flam station. The station is surrounded with the essential stores for travellers like few cafes, a super market-Coop, bike rentals, Information center and souvenir shops.

Flam which is such a beautiful quaint town in the middle of the valley, is surrounded by fjords and mountains. The three day stay at FLAM was our life’s most memorable and rejuvenating stay . We did nothing but enjoying the nature’s kaleidoscopic visual displays due to the effervescent weather: Freezing cold, rain, sunshine, rainbows, the magical blue sky, and low hanging clouds.
Activities in Flam are plenty, we have made a small list based on our experiences.
Trekking
Hiking
Kayaking
Fjord Cruise
Relaxing on the water front with Coffee
Walking or rather strolling along the river side.
If you want just see the town in a relaxed mood, walk around the town and enjoy the mesmerizing valley

If you are an adventurous person, do trekking, hiking, Kayaking and cycling.
There are regular fjord cruises which takes us from Flam to Gudvagen along the Nærøyfjord (UNESCO heritage) which is the narrowest fjord (20M) in the world, Aurland, Undredal, Dyrdal, Styvi. Cruise in fjord land is an amazing experience and we took the evening one, had great time.
The first day we enjoyed the flam town just by strolling around the canals, cafes, souvenir shops and super market.
Day two took a walking trail up to 5 kms… and a circular small hiking trail next to the flam railway station behind the hotel Fretheim.

Pamphlets of Walk-in trails maps along with the distance and details of difficult level are available at the information Centre and you could choose any one of the path. They are for trekking, cycling or just for walking around.
The next day went to Brekkofossen hiking. Brekkofossen, waterfall at an height of 800 meters was tiresome but worth the hardship after viewing the spectacular Valley of Flam. The sunrays, rain drops and the rainbow formed at the waterfall was magical.
The third day we enjoyed the cycling to the only Church in Flam, via Lunden which leads to Myrdal. From Flam to Myrdal its little difficult to walk as its uphill.
Overall, Flam is a must see place if you visit Norway and don’t miss the beauty created by the magic wand of Nature.
